Human remains discovered, no ID yet:Cause of death still unknown

A task force from the State Medical Examiner’s Office and the Kentucky State Police spent last Friday recovering human remains from a remote hunting area off Kentucky Highway 62 East. As of Monday, Mark Applin, the KSP’s public information officer, said the identification of the remains was being withheld until more facts were collected. “We have some idea of who it is but it wasn’t anyone in a missing persons report,” Applin said. The remains are believed to be of a white male in his late 50s to early 60s based on personal items found during the search.



Rosine firefighter accused of burning sheriff’s rental home

A member of the Rosine Volunteer Fire Department has been indicted for the Jan. 12 arson fire that destroyed a house in Horse Branch. Anthony “Tony” Marshall, 20, of 311 Renfro Road in Horse Branch, is accused of setting fire to a vacant rental home on School Lane. The house belonged to Ohio County Sheriff Elvis Doolin. Marshall is accused of setting the fire with 19-year-old Roger Dale Embry of Caneyville who was also indicted.


Farm-city supper set up for Feb. 24

It started several years ago as the Farm-City Breakfast, enjoyed a measure of success, and then slipped in popularity. Now its called the Farm-City Supper and its promoters — namely the Future Farmers of America Chapter at Ohio County High — hope its new-found resurgence will continue. The first Farm-City Supper was held last year and attracted approximately 300 persons to the OCHS cafeteria for food, fellowship and special features. The second annual event is scheduled for February 24 and Jeff Nalley, an area radio personality will be the guest speaker. The 2007 event will start with a silent auction at 5 p.m. and the supper and program will start at 6 p.m.


OCHS student wins speaking contest, earns trip to nationals in San Diego

Erica Martin is receiving something that most teens can’t boast, a free trip to San Diego to compete in a national competition. After placing first in the Future Educators of America impromptu speaking contest in Louisville last November, Martin advanced to the national FEA convention this weekend in California. For the impromptu speaking, contestants are given a prompt and then they have 10 minutes to write an answer. Once the 10 minutes are up, the response has to be two to three minutes in length.
