Ohio County High senior Collin St.Clair was named last week to the 2007 Messenger-Inquirer Third Region Boys’ Basketball Team’s first team. Collin, a 6-4 power forward, helped lead the Eagles to a 14-14 record this year. Eagle teammate Josh Clemons drew Honorable Mention recognition. The notation in last Friday’s edition of the Owensboro daily paper concerning St.Clair’s first-team selection said, “The senior burst onto the 3rd Region scene as a junior in his first year of varsity basketball. Big and strong, the tennis standout averaged 16 points and eight rebounds a game and was a force inside for the Eagles. ‘He’s probably been our most consistent player the past two years,’ Ohio County coach Paul Decker said. ‘He’s a great shooter, he just doesn’t step out. You can mark him down for 16 a game, every game.’” Collin is the son of Coy and Alice St.Clair of Hartford.
Ohio County High senior standout Erin Adams was named to the 2007 Girls’ All-Third Region Tournament team following last Saturday night’s regional championship game at Muhlenberg South High School in Greenville. Adams, a 5-11 forward, helped lead coach Brad Johnson’s Lady Eagles to a 22-8 record this season and their second consecutive 10th District championship. Joining Erin Adams on the regional All-Tournament Team were: Whitney Gaston, Heather Mitchell, and Abby Steele of Muhlenberg North; Brittany Douglas, Janae Howard, and Ashley Prince of Owensboro; Jasmine Newby and Kayla Stull of Meade County; Rachel Greenwell and Kimmie Kauffeld of Owensboro Catholic; and Molly Beeler of Grayson County. Erin is the daughter of Chuck and Marilu Adams of Beaver Dam.
Four former Ohio County High baseball players are currently playing collegiate baseball in the state. The list includes Nick Phelps and Braidy Vance, both seniors at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, sophomore pitcher Robert Coulter at Kentucky Wesleyan College, and freshman catcher Robert Givens at Brescia University. Both Phelps and Vance have started every game for the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders this season, with Phelps hitting .382(21 hits, 7 doubles, 3 home runs, 17 runs scored, 10 RBI) and Vance batting at a .227 clip(13 hits, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 8 runs scored, 11 RBI) in 16 games. Lindsey Wilson entered this week with a 9-7 record.
The honors keep coming for former Ohio County High standout Julie Leach, as the 2005 OCHS graduate was voted the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s “Player of the Month” for February. A sophomore center for the Transylvania University Pioneers women’s basketball team, Julie was also the conference’s “Player of the Month” in November, becoming only the second female athlete to win the honor twice in the same athletic season. She is the daughter of Joe and Debbie Leach of Beaver Dam.
The annual Ohio County Baseball “Meet the Players and Coaches” dinner will be held on Saturday, March 24 at OCHS’ Eagle Rock Cafe. The annual affair includes a catered meal, drawings for lots of door prizes donated by area merchants and individuals, and a silent auction on other items along with the introduction of the 2007 Eagle varsity, junior varsity, and freshman baseball squads. Live entertainment has also been featured at the three previous dinners. The “Meet the Players and Coaches” dinner is one of the Eagle Baseball Booster Club’s main fundraisers each year. Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased from any OCHS player, coach, or booster club member. This year’s grand prize will be a Holland Black grill worth over $500. Those who purchase tickets will be eligible for all door prizes, including the grand prize, and they do not have to be present to win.
