Eagles rally to beat OHS 9-6 in region opener
The Ohio County Eagles rode a seven-run fourth inning outburst and a strong relief performance from junior right-hander Wade Taylor to a 9-6 win over Owensboro Monday night in first round action in the Third Region Baseball Tournament. Monday’s win at Muhlenberg South High School, which pushed Ted Hill’s 10th District champions to 23-7 on the year, was Ohio County’s first opening round win in regional play in the past five years–all the previous four losses coming at the hands of Ninth District teams, either to Apollo, Owensboro Catholic, or Daviess County. Ohio County advanced to Tuesday’s semifinal round where they were matched against 25th-ranked Butler County. The 12th District champion Bears overcame a 2-0 deficit in Monday’s nightcap to beat 11th District runner-up Hancock County 4-2 to improve to 31-4 on the year. The Third Region baseball championship game was set for 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Ohio County High’s senior first baseman Bryan Taylor was voted to the 2007 All-Third Region Baseball Team by a vote of the region’s coaches in their annual meeting last Friday. Taylor–the son of Steve and Lesa Taylor of Centertown–leads Coach Ted Hill’s Eagles in most offensive categories as Ohio County compiled a strong 20-7 regular-season record.
Ohio County High School’s Collin St.Clair made a strong showing at last week’s 2007 Fifth Third Bank/KHSAA State Tennis Tournament in Lexington, winning three matches in boys’ singles before falling in the quarterfinal round. St.Clair’s showing also earned him a spot on the 2007 Kentucky All-State Tennis Team. St.Clair opened play last Thursday, May 24, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over South Oldham senior Calvin Fields at Berea College’s courts. That same afternoon, the Eagle senior blasted Danville senior Chris Bright by set scores of 6-2 and 6-0. On Friday at noon, Collin opened play with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Paducah Tilghman junior Charlie Pittard in play at the Boone/Downing Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Kentucky to earn a berth in the quarterfinals. But there he met his “match” in Louisville St. Xavier senior Casey Blythe, who took a hardfought 6-3, 6-2 decision.
The Ohio County Eagles downed McLean County 11-1 in a six-inning game last Wednesday night the claim the championship of the 10th District Baseball Tournament. Wednesday’s title game, played at McLean County High School in Calhoun, saw Ohio County claim its third district championship in Ted Hill’s five-year tenure as Eagle head coach. It also marked a remarkable eighth consecutive year the Eagles and Cougars had met for the district title–six times in the old 12th District and the past two years in the 10th District championship.
Four Ohio County Eagles, along with two OCHS Lady Eagles, were named All-10th District Tournament following their respective district tournaments last week. The Ohio County Eagles won the 10th District Baseball Tournament Wednesday night at McLean County High School downing host McLean County 11-1 in six innings. The Lady Eagles were beaten 3-2 in eight innings last Monday night at home by top-seeded Muhlenberg North, who went on to claim the district title.
