Arson blamed in shop, home fire

Two separate fires destroyed a local motorcycle shop and home on Kentucky Highway 62 East last weekend in what is an apparent arson case. The Ohio County Chopper shop, owned by Robert D. Hayes, was set on fire the first time on Friday and again on Sunday.


OC Fiscal Court changes mind on broadband

A week after saying the county wasn’t financially capable of investing in the ConnectGRADD $2.3 million broadband initiative, the Ohio County Fiscal Court did an about-face Tuesday. The Fiscal Court voted unanimously at its special called meeting to join the six other GRADD counties — Daviess, McLean, Hancock, Webster, Henderson and Union — to bring broadband to its rural households and businesses.


County keeps 270 area code

The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) has decided to accommodate the rising demand for new telephone numbers in western Kentucky by splitting area code 270, with the eastern portion retaining the current area code. In an order issued today, the PSC said that the western portion of area code 270, which includes the cities of Henderson, Hopkinsville, Madisonville, Murray and Paducah, will be assigned a new area code.


Proposed leash law places responsibility on dog owners

Ohio County is considering a leash law ordinance that will require owners to be more responsible with their pets while also giving the animal control officer enforcement powers. The Ohio County Fiscal Court was presented with a proposed ordinance at last Tuesday’s regular meeting for a first reading but tabled the issue to allow County Attorney Greg Hill to fine-tune the law.

Jaboa Kari Tribble of Centertown became the first student from the Ohio County Middle School to win first place in clay-animation at a statewide Student Technology and Learning Program (STLP) contest. Clay-animation or “claymation” is a difficult art to master. Since the late-1970s, when the art form was first introduced by Will Vinton, the art of claymation has progressed, bringing with it great technological advances.
