The Ohio County baseball Eagles saw their hopes of a Third Region championship dashed last Wednesday night as the Apollo Eagles grabbed an early lead and beat Ohio County 10-0 in a five-inning game. The loss at Muhlenberg South High School, one night after Ohio County beat highly-regarded Butler County, ended the local Eagles’ season at 24-8. After last Monday’s 9-6 win over Ninth District runner-up Owensboro in the first round, Ohio County was matched against the 25th-ranked Butler County Bears who rode into Tuesday’s semifinal with an impressive 31-4 record. In Tuesday’s game, Ohio County came up with a five-run fourth-inning outburst win 6-1 and handed the Bears only their fifth loss of the year.

The Ohio County High School boys’ soccer team began conditioning workouts this week under the direction of Eagle soccer coach Isaac Obermann. Obermann’s 2006 squad, the first in the school’s history, finished its season with a 3-11-2 record. More than a dozen members of that team are expected to return this fall, including players who scored nearly 75 percent of the Eagles’ goals on offense a year ago. Anyone interested in taking part in the conditioning may contact Obermann at 315-2462. Conditioning sessions are being held daily from 5:30-7 p.m. at the OCHS soccer fields.
