KHSAA ‘dead period’ begins next week
Though school has been out for nearly a month, many returning high school students are still participating in school-related sports programs. Area athletes are attending specialized camps or competing in summer leagues in activities including baseball, basketball, and cheerleading, as well as preseason conditioning and practice for the upcoming 2007 fall sports seasons in cross-country, football, golf, soccer, and volleyball. But all those activities will be coming to an end next Monday, June 25, when the Kentucky High School Association’s annual mandated “dead period” begins. The “dead period” lasts for two weeks, ending on July 10.
Like the Lady Eagles, the Ohio County High School boys’ basketball team is in the midst of a summer blitz of competitions. Coach Paul Decker’s squad has competed in four multi-team “shootout” camps in the past three weeks at Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park, Warren East, Bowling Green, and Meade County, played in smaller 3-4 team one-day competitions at Hopkins County Central and Tell City, Indiana, and hosted a 12-team “shootout” of its own this Monday and Tuesday. The local boys traveled to Daviess County on Wednesday and to Apollo on Friday before observing the KHSAA’s annual two-week “dead period.”
The Ohio County High School Lady Eagles basketball team “has been on the road and in the gym quite a lot already this summer”, according to Lady Eagle head coach Brad Johnson. Some activities the OCHS girls have been involved in include hosting the annual camp for local girls in grades one through eight(“Little Lady Eagles Camp”) at the OCHS gym on May 29-June 1, hosting the first-ever Lady Eagles High School Team Camp, as well as traveling to camps at Nelson County, Madisonville, and McLean County. This weekend the Lady Eagles will visit Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Recent Ohio County High graduate Adam Daugherty continues to put up some good offensive numbers for Owensboro’s American Legion Post 9 Bombers baseball team. Daugherty had a double in the Bombers’ comeback win last Thursday over Boonville, Indiana and then doubled twice and drove in two runs to help Post 9 beat always-tough Evansville Funkhouser in the first game of a doubleheader last Saturday night. Owensboro’s Saturday split with Funkhouser at the University of Southern Indiana field put them at 3-2 on the season.
Ohio County High junior-to-be Lars King continued his strong play in the Greater Owensboro Junior Golf Series last week, winning a tour event last Wednesday after finishing second two days before. King’s win came at Owensboro’s Ben Hawes State Park course, with his even-par round of 71 topping the boy’s 16-18 championship flight in the tour’s fourth event. Benton Maglinger’s 73 was good enough for second in Wednesday’s competition.
Eagle baseball banquet this Saturday at OCHS

The event is slated to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday. The 24-8 Eagle varsity will be guests of honor Saturday evening along with OCHS’ junior varsity and freshman baseball squads.
