Eagle bass fishers second in region, sending five boats to state finals

Though the weather outside was “frightful” Saturday, the bass fishing turned out to be “delightful” at the Region 1 Bass Fishing Championships held at Lake Barkley’s Kuttawa Harbor Marina. There, on a very rainy day, a duo of Ohio County High anglers placed second in the individual competition and OCHS had no less than five boats qualify for the KHSAA State Championship meet.

The state tournament is set for May 7-8 at Kentucky Dam.

Sophomores Logan Littleton and Jayden Peech placed second Saturday with a total of 15 pounds six ounces of bass caught in their limit of five fish, including one weighing in at five pounds one ounce, tying for second in the day’s “Big Bass” competition. Muhlenberg County’s team of Gates, Hawkins, and Smith landed one weighing five pounds three ounces — but did not qualify for the state finals.

Other OCHS qualifiers included: 8. Clayton Cruze/Kolten Heflin—5 fish/12 lb. 14 oz., 10. Jake Davenport/Carson Fitzgerald—5/12 lb. 8 oz., 16. John Thomas Barnard/Eli Hoover—5/11 lb. 15 oz., and 18. Colton Brown/Parker Patterson—5/11 lb. 13 oz. The first 20 boats in the regional meet automatically advance to the state tournament.

Ohio County’s other entry Saturday fared this way: 28. Aiden Asberry/Levi Hepner—5/10 lb., 4 oz.

Marshall County’s boat of Cope, Henderson, Redden, and Wyatt took first Saturday with a catch of 17 lbs. 13 oz. Other state qualifiers include: 3. Harris/Tooley (Muhlenberg Co.)—5/15 lb. 3 oz., 4. Canada/Oliver (McCracken Co.)—5/12 lb. 12 oz., 11. Bush/Morgan (South Warren)—5/12 lb. 5 oz., 12. Mann/Robinson/Thomas/Webb (Marshall Co.)—5/12 lb. 3 oz., 13. Green/Jones (Trigg Co.)—5/12 lb. 3 oz. (had smaller “big fish” than 12th-place team), 14. Ethridge/Sabatino (Trigg Co.) 5/12 lb., 15. Elkins/Walton (Graves Co.)—4/11 lb. 5 oz., 17. Morphew/York (Apollo)—5/11 lb. 4 oz., 19.
