Fordsville custodian finalist for statewide award

The Fred Award honors non-administrative staff whose exceptional contributions create an environment conducive to learning and growth within their school communities. Finalists for this prestigious accolade embody four guiding principles: makes a positive difference each day; has a heart for people; changes ordinary moments into memorable ones and leads by example. Fordsville Elementary School Principal Jason McConnell said Allie Richards “truly displays a Fred-like character and spirit.”

Richards, the lead custodian at Fordsville Elementary School, was named one of three finalists by the Kentucky Association of School Administrators last week for its 2025 Fred Award.

The Fred Program, now in its 18th year, has a mission to celebrate the unsung heroes of Kentucky’s public schools – the dedicated support staff who are the heartbeat of our school communities. Presented by KASA, in collaboration with author Mark Sanborn and American Fidelity, this year’s program extends its reach to 54 school districts whose Freds have been honored statewide.

The Fred Award Program annually invites nominations from districts across the Commonwealth. Inspired by the story of Fred Shea, immortalized in Mark Sanborn’s bestselling book, The Fred Factor.

“She definitely meets the qualifications (of the award). She is the most thoughtful and sincere person I have ever worked with or come in contact with,” McConnell, who nominated Richards, said. “There are no ulterior motives. That is just the way she is.”

McConnell said in his church they talk about “servant leadership,” a philosophy and leadership style where leaders prioritize serving the needs of others.

“She definitely does that,” he said. “She doesn’t just work here – She serves. The staff and students gravitate toward her.”

Richards said she is humbled, honored, surprised and touched to not only be seen in that way but to be nominated for the award.

“This is just naturally who I am,” she said. “I am nothing special.”

She said that working at the school is “the best job ever” and gave credit to the administration and staff. But, it’s the children who mean the most to her.

“They are my babies. It’s hard when they leave us.”

Melissa Hughes, secretary from Campbellsville Independent Schools, and Marsha Duncan, Social Emotional Learning Coordinator at LaRue County Schools, were the other two finalists for the award.

They exemplify selflessness and unwavering dedication,” said Dr. Rhonda Caldwell, KASA Chief Executive Officer. “Their impact is foundational to the classroom—they inspire, uplift, and foster a culture of belonging. These individuals make every student feel seen and valued, often without recognition, but their legacy of kindness and leadership is immeasurable.”

According to the press release from KASA, “Allie Richards, lead custodian at Fordsville Elementary, is a cherished and selfless member of the school community whose influence reaches far beyond her role. Fondly known as “Miss Allie,” she serves with a joyful spirit—leading reading groups, encouraging students, and volunteering at every opportunity. Her servant’s heart, gentle encouragement and sincere connections have made her a source of strength and inspiration for all. Whether supporting students academically or lifting up staff in prayer, Miss Allie shows up daily with a smile and unwavering commitment. She is the kind of person who makes others feel seen, loved and valued. A true blessing to the school, Miss Allie embodies humility, heart, and the spirit of service that transforms a building into a family.”

Each finalist’s district will be visited by a film crew to capture the essence of their service. A crew will be in Fordsville today to create a three to four-minute video that will aid the judging panel — a consortium of education leaders from districts statewide — in selecting the recipient of the prestigious statewide award. The winner will be unveiled on July 25 at KASA’s annual leadership institute in Louisville. Both the winner and finalists will be honored with a distinguished marble plaque, a copy of The Fred Factor by Mark Sanborn, complimentary accommodation at the Galt House Hotel, and a financial award of $1,000 (winner) or $500 (finalists).
