SCHERERVILLE, IND. — George Abner, age 84, of Schererville, Ind., went to Heaven on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, after an extended illness. After high school, George joined the Army and served our country for almost two years. He and his wife, Marge, then returned to the Calumet Region and George began working for Youngstown Steel (LTV Steel) and retired from there as a millwright. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, as he loved the outdoors and always had a bird dog with him. George was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Ind., and held the office of deacon for many years. He truly loved his pastor at that time, Dr. Jack Hyles. If you asked George what his favorite foods and/or restaurants were, he would say: Munster Donuts, Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee, Almira’s Cake and Cherry Pie! George was the King of one-liners, and had the patience of a saint. He was loved by so many and he will definitely be missed.
George is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margie E. Abner; his son, Timothy B. Abner Sr., of Schererville; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Roy (Brooke) Abner, of Clarksville, Tenn., and many other relatives and dear friends.
A visitation was held on Friday, May 8, at Memory Lane Funeral Home, Crown Point, Ind. The funeral followed with Pastor Roy Moffitt officiating. Burial took place at Memory Lane Memorial Park Cemetery in Pastoral Gardens.
