Softball Eagles enter week with 1-5 record

Ohio County High’s softball Eagles went 1-4 in the last week to stand at 1-5 on the year. David Decker’s squad picked up a win over Breckinridge County last Tuesday but then dropped their next four outings, including three in last weekend’s Lady Falcon Invitational at Hickman County High School in Clinton.

Yesterday the Eagles visited Meade County then took some time off for Spring Break before traveling to Greenville next Tuesday, April 13, to challenge 10th District foe Muhlenberg County. The Eagle freshman team was also scheduled to host Owensboro Catholic next Monday at Jake Russell Field.

Last Tuesday at Hardinsburg, Ohio County grabbed an early lead and were never headed in beating host Breckinridge County by a final score of 6-2. The Eagles got singles from Reagan Maggard, Elli Graves, and Camden Sandefur and a Sidney Hudnall double to stake them to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The home team plated a run on the bottom of that inning to trail 3-1.

That score stood until the top of the fifth when Maggard led off with a double, followed by base hits from Hudnall, Graves, and Haley Alsman to bump the margin to 6-1. Lady Tiger Skyler Henderson homered in the bottom of the sixth inning to decide the final score.

On Friday, the Eagles traveled to Elkton to take on Todd County Central and returned home with an 18-13 loss in a 25-hit slugfest. The OCHS girls led 11-5 going into the bottom of the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Lady Rebels parleyed four hits, four bases on balls, and a hit batter into 10 runs to move on top 15-11.

Each team scored in the halves of the sixth frame to account for the final score. Decker and Elli Graves had three hits each for Ohio County in the loss. Samantha Case and Haylee Vass had three apiece for Todd Central.

Saturday at the Lady Falcon Invitational, Ohio County was matched first against host Hickman County, with the Lady Falcons taking a 3-1 decision. HCHS pitcher Jacey Rushing allowed the Eagles just two singles while Rushing had two hits of her own in Hickman’s seven-hit offense.

The game was scoreless entering the bottom of the third when the home team took advantage of two hits, 2 hit batters, and an Eagle fielding error to score three times. Ohio County managed a run in the top of the fourth but could not earn a tie in the game which was shortened to five innings on a time limit.

The Eagles’ second game in the Invitational went only three innings as Hancock County rode a big 11-run first inning outburst to a 16-1 win. The Lady Hornets’ big outburst consisted of 3 singles, a double, three bases on balls, and three hit batters. An Elli Graves single plated OCHS’ only run in the top of the third, but Hancock County scored five more times in the bottom of the inning before the game was called.

Winning pitcher Lily Roberts smacked a three-run homer run in the last of the third.

Saturday’s final game saw Ballard Memorial score three times in the top of the first enroute to a 5-1 win. Ohio County actually outhit the Lady Bombers 5-2 but committed five fielding errors.

Ballard Memorial’s Kaylee O’Connor hit a three-run homer account for the first inning blitz, staking pitcher Abby Cooper to the early lead they would not relinquish.
